The LandMark Group was conceived in 2011 when Steve Peterson retired from the Chicago Police Department. Once Steve was promoted to detective, he realized he had landed his dream job. With his attention to detail, unmatched work ethic and relentless pursuit, it was clear that our founder had the necessary skills for a successful career. After proving himself a detective and subsequently a supervisor, Steve was assigned to the Violent Crimes Task Force. At this assignment, he worked with the FBI and local jurisdictions to track down the most violent of criminals. Continuing to make a name for himself meritoriously as a hard working investigator and supervisor, Steve rose quickly through the ranks of the Chicago Police Department.
In 2000, he became the Commander of both of Chicago’s airports. He assembled a reliable team and established new protocols, increasing security and safeguarding one of our country’s busiest airports, O’Hare. After 9/11, he directed the Chicago Police Airport Unit in establishing drastic modifications to operations by pinpointing existing weaknesses and enacting preemptive measures to circumvent future incidences. Steve returned to the Chicago Police Department’s Detective Division as the Commander of Area 4. Through his lead, Area 4 was widely known as the “Premier Detective Area” amongst the existing 5 in Chicago. At the height of his career, Steve was appointed Deputy Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department’s Investigative Services. This assignment put him third in charge of the Department and accountable for thousands of officers, detectives, and supervisors. The Bureau of Investigative Services comprised of all of Chicago Detectives, Organized Crime, Evidence Technicians and Forensic Services. Steve enhanced the investigative process, brought accountability and implemented technological advances into the crime fighting operation. Deputy Superintendent Peterson was called upon to speak to the Illinois Supreme Court for legislative changes in support of stricter laws on crime. Through diligence, unmatched work ethic, and a sense of duty to his community, Steve led a rewarding career through the Chicago Police Department.
Upon his retirement in 2011, Steve brought his investigative and managerial skills into the private sector, forming The LandMark Group LLC. Maintaining the same managerial style, Steve built the LandMark Group with partners who were held to the highest standard and whom always completed the assignment. As the LandMark Group grew, Matt Peterson joined and became a valuable asset. Follow in his father’s footsteps, Matt joined the Chicago Police Department in 2004 and worked an array of assignments spanning vastly different parts of the city. Begging in the high crime, West Side, he combatted gangs, guns and drugs in an ever persistent challenge to make Chicago a safer place. Following patrol and an assignment with the Gang Unit, Matt shifted his efforts to Chicago’s Gold Coast, Lincoln Park and Michigan Avenue area. Subsequent to over 10 years in patrol assignments, he was selected for a position within the Bureau of Organized Crime, Intelligence Section. The mission of the Intelligence Section is National Security.
While at the Intelligence Section he initiated investigations of crime syndicates and partnered with Federal Agencies to assist in joint missions. Matt concentrated his efforts in combatting identity theft, bank fraud, and property crimes. To further hone his skills, he sought out training and successfully completed the FBI’s week long under cover school and the FBI’s source development school. Matt was the case officer on a number of complex investigations that resulted in the successful prosecution of sophisticated criminals. One of these cases that gained media attention involved a crew of Russian Nationals who travelled to the U.S. committing retail theft, resulting in the loss of millions of dollars. Most recently, Matt spearheaded the efforts to take down a group who preyed on the innocent in an array of crimes that include: identity theft, wire fraud, burglary, and mail theft. As the lead investigator of this multi-jurisdictional effort whose victims included the Chicago Cubs, dozens of college sports teams, concert ticket providers, and hundreds of individuals across the country, he was responsible for the operation to gather the evidence, recruit sources and present to the prosecutors for consideration of charging. These criminals were technologically savvy and went through great efforts to conceal their identity. Following the success of this case, Matt joined a Federal Task Force and currently, strives to keep America safe.
